The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops document, “Sing to the Lord,” defines the cantor as “a singer and leader of congregational song” (Sing to the Lord, Music in Divine Worship, 37). The most important role of the cantor is that of the psalmist, proclaiming God’s word in the Responsorial Psalm during the Liturgy of the Word. Additionally, the cantor is responsible for leading the singing of the assembly during the hymns and service music at Mass. Our cantors make a strong commitment to prayerful preparation for their service at Mass. The requirements to be a successful cantor must include a strong singing voice and the ability to encourage others to join in singing. Likewise, the ability to read music is highly desirable.
